It can cause the toenails to become thick, yellow, discolored and many times become painful. Fungus toenails can occur in almost any age group but effect mostly older adults due to their poor circulation and poor immune system. Fungus toenails are also caused by trauma to the nail, possibly from constant bumping and banging. Another cause might be from constantly being in closed shoes with excess of moisture and perspiration. For many years fungus toenails in young women, including teenage girls, was a very rare occurrence. There has now been a ten-fold increase in the amount of young women getting fungus in their toenails. One of the possible causes is from overuse of nail polish during the winter months. In the winter, women tend to wear closed shoes, socks and/or stockings. This can cause excessive perspiration and moisture – a breeding ground for fungus toenails. In addition, continuous use of nail polish does not allow the nail to breath. Once the fungus gets into one toenail it can spread to all the toenails and can even go to fingernails. There are numerous treatments for fungus toenails including topicals and oral medications as well as laser treatment. Treatment for this infection can take months and even up to years to get a complete clearing. It is recommended to check your toenails every couple weeks. Take the polish off your toenails and check to see if you have any yellowish or discoloration. If you do, contact your local podiatrist so he or she can make a full evaluation and do a fungal culture. They can get you started on the proper treatment for this problem. Spend a day with nature. Just bring water, lunch and a smile — we'll do the rest. We supply the canoes, kayaks (first come, first served—reserve ahead), gear, training and transportation. Our experienced leaders teach the ways of currents and eddies and how to paddle mankind's oldest craft, with a few new tricks. Tell us what you want to learn—we are eager to teach. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Arrive 8:15 am, Leave from Arboretum. Ages 8 through adults, $35 per trip. Your leaders will fit you with a lifejacket and paddle and then drive to the river, where they will discuss maneuvering techniques and canoe safety. Our leaders will guide you down the river. Our aim is to return to the Arboretum by 3:30 pm, give or take an hour.
