It's hot and none of us want to waste any water! Here are some water-conservation tips. • Check faucets and pipes for leaks. A small drip can waste twenty gallons of water per day. • Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket. Every flush is 5-7 gallons! • Check your toilets for leaks. Use food coloring. YouTube it! • Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks. Read the house water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak. • Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators. • Insulate your water pipes. You'll get hot water f a s t e r p l u s a v o i d w a s t i n g w a t e r w h i l e i t h e a t s u p . • Take shorter showers. A four-minute shower uses approximately 20-40 gallons of water. • Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush. Saves a lot of water! • Rinse your razor in the sink with a few inches of warm water rather than running the faucet. • Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for only full loads. • Minimize use of kitchen sink garbage disposal units. They require a lot of water to operate properly. • When washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running for rinsing. • Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Just rinse them in a stoppered sink or a pan of clean water. Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge. Conserve Water This Summer: R a r i t a n H e a d w a t e r s A s s o c i a t i o n ( R H A ) , i n c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h M S I Plumbing, is providing well water testing for residents of Clinton Township. If your household water comes from a private well, it is not tested by any state or local authority. Well water tests can be expensive, but Clinton Township residents may have their drinking water tested for coliform bacteria and nitrates for $60. Additional testing options are also available. The well-testing kits contain easy-to-follow instructions and containers approved by a state-certified laboratory. Kits may be purchased Monday, September 12 through Friday, September 16, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at MSI Plumbing, 1109 Route 31 South, Lebanon. Water samples may be dropped off at MSI's offices on Monday, September 19, from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. No cash will be accepted; checks only. For further info., contact Mara Tippett at 908.234.1852, ext. 401 or email: welltesting@raritanheadwaters.org. Safe drinking water is essential to good health, and testing well water at a certified lab is the only way to know whether water from a private well is safe. Both human-caused and naturally occurring contaminants are often found in private wells. Nitrates and bacteria, which can lead to immediate and serious health conditions, may be found in well water as a result of a poorly performing septic system or a nearby agricultural source. Two naturally occurring elements, arsenic and radon, are also commonly found in well water in northwestern New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that all homeowners test their well water for contaminants annually. About Raritan Headwaters Association: Since 1959, RHA has been working to address water quality issues and has served as an effective advocate for conservation throughout the 39 communities in Hunterdon, Morris, and Somerset Counties that make up the Raritan Headwaters watershed region. The 470 square mile watershed plays a critical role in meeting the demands of more than 1.5 million residential, commercial, agricultural and municipal water users within the region and beyond, into NJ's urban areas.
