Water conservation is so important
and, in many ways, easy to do. Here
are a few ideas that might work for
you and your family in your yard and
garden. Enjoy your summer!
• Plant drought-resistant lawns, shrubs and plants.
• Replace perennial borders with native plants. Native plants use
less water and are more resistant to local plant diseases.
• Plant slopes with plants that will retain water
and help reduce runoff.
• Group plants according to their watering needs.
• Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants –
it helps with evaporation.
• Don't water the sidewalk, street or house. Position your
sprinklers correctly and check on them every so often.
• Water your lawn only when it needs it. Most lawns only need
about 1" of water each week.
• Deep-soak your lawn so that roots get water.
A light sprinkling can evaporate quickly.
• Water during the early or late parts of the day;
avoid watering when it's windy.
• Add organic matter which helps increase
absorption and water retention.
• Don't run the hose while washing your car.
