The main causes are usually insistence on getting one's own way, attempts to control their partner, fear of intimacy and protecting self-interests. In order for a couples' relationship to survive, there have to be communication, compromises and an ability to settle disagreements. Individuals have to stop fighting with the goal of winning and focus on strengthening the relationship. Compromises and agreements have to be made and kept. A written agreement can be helpful in remembering and keeping commitments. "Change your thoughts and you can change your world" – Norman Vincent Peale Communication has to be ongoing. Avoiding confrontation never works and can cause emotional distance that eventually destroys the relationship. Getting to the heart of the problem is what is needed when your relationship is struggling. When there are children in the house the destruction is multiplied. Children will repeat what they learned from watching their parents' disagreements in their own relationships. Finding a competent therapist is essential when communication is unsuccessful. In my practice I do IMAGO therapy which focuses on "Couplehood: A New Way to Love". Almost always IMAGO therapy transforms and deepens the relationship. Couples begin to understand their partner better and take a more mature way of understanding their most intimate relationship. They learn to override the fight-or-flight response and, instead, deactivate their "reactive" self so that they can communicate without fear of eliciting an argument.
