Have you ever wondered how to properly retire your worn, torn, faded
or badly soiled United States flag? In honor of Flag Day, Clinton Boy
Scout Troop 121 will host a United States Flag Retirement ceremony on
Friday, June 10 beginning at (approximately) 7:30 pm at The Red Mill
Museum grounds in Clinton. The ceremony will begin immediately following
the Clinton Flag Day parade and will be held in the back of the grounds, near the
log cabin exhibit.
This ceremony is open to the public and all are invited to bring lawn
chairs as well as United States flags that are in need of retirement. Our
nation's flag should be retired with dignity and respect. The United States Flag
Code states that "the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting
emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."
Celebrated on June 14, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag
of the United States, which happened that day in 1777 by resolution of
the Second Continental Congress. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued
a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949,
National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
As part of the flag retirement ceremony, Troop 121 will present United
States flag history and the singing of patriotic songs featuring the Troop
121 marching band. Flags selected for retirement should be brought to The Red
Mill by 6:45 pm or can be dropped off at the Clinton Presbyterian Church, located
at 91 Center St., in Clinton. A drop off bin will be located on the porch located on
