Staged reading is a form of theatre without sets and costumes. The actors read from scripts, seated or incorporating minimal stage movement. OCP's first staged reading will be Steel Magnolias, a tragi-comedy by Robert Harling about the bonds of friendship among six Southern women who are as delicate as magnolias and as tough as steel. Set in a beauty parlor, Harling describes the women of his play as "witty, intelligent and, above all, real characters. They, in no way, shape or form, are meant to be portrayed as cartoons or caricatures." The staged reading will be presented to the public on May 14 at the North County Branch, 65 Halstead Street in Clinton, at 2:00 pm. Free, but reservations are recommended. Please call: 908.730.6135 or click on the Calendar of Events at: www.hclibrary.us. Director Merry LaRue's directing credits include Our Town for OCP and A Perfect Analysis for Playwrights Theatre in Madison. As an actress, she created the role of "Pearl" for the world premiere of Darrah Cloud's Dreamhouse at Centenary Stage Company. She also played the mother in the Elixir Theatre Company production of A. Defazio's verse play Christine in New York City. Merry trained at the New School in NYC, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. OCP was founded by Jim Kudless and Alexandra Teplov in 1979. The company's objective is to stimulate interest in drama, offering the opportunity for self-expression in all aspects of theater, including plays, musicals and concerts andto provide educational experiences for "actors" of all ages. Shows are performed at various locations throughout Hunterdon County. For more information, visit www.OldwickPlayers.org or email questions to: merrylarue@aol.com. Make sure to visit us on Facebook!
