We've all experienced it – starring at the computer screen watching the swirl and now, for some of us, the rolling dots! What was once just an annoyance may now impact your business if it's your website that is swirling or rolling those dots. Studies indicate a web page's slow load time directly correlates to site abandonment: • Fifty-two percent of website users cite speed as a factor in determining loyalty to a particular site. (KISSmetrics) • A one-second delay in page load time decreases page views by 11%, conversions by 7%, and customer satisfaction by 16%. (Aberdeen Group) • Forty-seven percent of consumers expect a page to render in two seconds or less; 88% of visitors dissatisfied by page load times probably won't shop from the site, and about a third of them will share negative experiences with a friend. (Econsultancy) Website page load time is the time that elapses between the request for the page and the rendering of that page. The absolute speed of your website can depend on network connections over which you have little control. However, you do have some control over your website's relative response time. Some tips to improve your website speed are: • Use smaller (compressed) or fewer images on a page. • Choose a caching system that delivers static content in less time. • Remove unnecessary characters from the underlying code. And people aren't the only visitors turned off by slow response time. Google admits it takes speed into account when determining search rankings. No doubt page speed is something that visitors notice – humans as well as search engines. Try the Google test yourself: https://developers.google.com/ speed/pagespeed/insights/. So, if you want your website to come up in search results and you want visitors to stay on your site once they get there, speed should be important to you, too. The effort it takes to get your website up to speed can be well worth it in terms of search results and visitor retention.
