By: Jim Brown – ACSM Certified Personal Trainer ET (Exercise Therapy) Specialization As the health and wellness industry continues to evolve, a need for specialized exercise programs focusing on educating clients about overcoming their own physical limitations while improving their overall health has emerged. These programs fall under the umbrella of exercise therapy. Exercise therapy is an exercise program designed and prescribed for specific therapeutic goals. Its purpose is to work towards the restoration of normal musculoskeletal function, reduce symptoms of certain diseases, improve cardiovascular performance, and/or reduce pain through a variety of therapeutic activities. The role of an exercise therapist is to design new exercise programs that will improve the "whole" client while using additional therapeutic exercises to improve any limitations the client is struggling with. Exercise therapists also collaborate with their client's physical therapist and/ or doctors to make sure proper medical clearance is issued and to follow any directions regarding contraindications (what to avoid) while exercising. As the client works through the therapeutic exercise program, progress is shared with all medical professionals involved and hopefully reduces contraindications and improves overall health. Exercise therapy is provided by professionals with an educational background in exercise physiology, personal training with a certification in exercise therapy, or other allied health degrees. These professionals will be able to work with your other therapists and doctors to design an exercise program that allows for improvement, modify programs as client needs change, enhance fitness goals as clients become more comfortable with the program, and even focus on preventative health lifestyles (instead of just being reactive). In the end, exercise therapy is an effective program that can allow you to accomplish more in your life, feel less pain, and conquer your fitness goals!
