A number of scam calls and emails are targeting New Jersey's taxpayers —
especially our senior citizens. One of the best ways for you to protect yourself is
to be informed and able to spot a fraudulent call. The subject of these phone calls has
been focused on callers pretending to be the IRS, demanding payment and other money
from innocent Americans.
To help you spot these calls, here are some things that the IRS would NEVER
do (according to the IRS):
• Demand immediate payment. The IRS will always send a bill in the
mail first.
• Demand payment without allowing you to question appeal
the amount you owe.
• Require that you pay your taxes with a certain payment method.
For example, saying you can only pay your taxes with a prepaid debit card.
• Ask for your credit or debit card information over the phone.
Do NOT give this out to anyone over the phone.
• Threaten to call the police or have you arrested for not paying.
If any of these things happen, hang up immediately and do not give out
any personal information. Many of these callers have intent to steal your money or
identity. These scammers can spoof caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling and
may sound official, but this is not always the case. If you think that a call is fake - hang up.
If you have any question on taxes you may owe, call the IRS at 800.829.1040.
IRS workers can help you. Please contact the U.S. Treasury Inspector General
for Tax Administration (TIGTA) to report the call. Use their "IRS Impersonation
Scam Reporting" web page. You can also call 800.366.4484. Report it to the
Federal Trade Commission. Use the "FTC Complaint Assistant" on FTC.gov. Please
add "IRS Telephone Scam" in the notes. The IRS is aware of this problem and are
always working to combat fraudulent calls. Stay alert to scams that use the
IRS as a lure. Tax scams can happen any time of year, not just at tax time. For more
info, visit Tax Scams and Consumer Alerts" on IRS.gov.
