A Morton's Neuroma is an inflamed nerve usually between the third and fourth toe. It can cause numbness, shooting, burning and very intense pain. It can progress slowly over time, and usually can be intermittent and certainly aggravated by shoes and activities. It is experienced by women more than men due to their shoes (doesn't necessarily mean high heel shoes). Conservative treatments include cortisone injections, padding and custom made arch supports. More aggressive treatments include surgical excision of the nerve. In the last few years, a new minimally invasive surgical procedure has been shown to be 85% effective when conservative treatments would fail. The new procedure is a Neuroma Decompression surgical technique using the KobyGard System. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia, usually in the hospital. Using the KobyGard System allows the Podiatrist to incise the ligament without harming nerves or other soft tissue. This technique is performed through a very small incision between the third and fourth toe. It usually requires one or two sutures. Recovery time is quick. Some people are able to return to comfortable shoes within a few days. If you have any questions, please contact your local podiatrist, Howard J. Tzorfas, D.P.M. at: 908.236.6999 – and have relief tomorrow! For more information, please visit my website at: www.DrTzorfas.com. C a L L i N g a L L C h i L i C o N t E s t a N t s ! Save the date!
