This year we are honored that three Hunterdon County scouts chose Valley Crest to plan and develop their Eagle Scout Service Projects, Christopher Kiel, Troop 121; Luke Bernick, Troop 119; and Andy Kapetanakis, formerly of Troop 191. Christopher Kiel envisioned an outdoor classroom at the farm, nestled within a heavily wooded area surrounded by pine trees and adjacent to one of the farm's public trails. With sustainability in mind, Chris used fallen trees, a result of Hurricane Sandy, to build a large circular log seating area. The classroom promotes active learning for students to learn about nature while surrounded by plants, trees and open sky. Valley Crest's naturalist, Jenna Tomiello, uses the outdoor classroom for many of her hands-on activities that teach children about ecology and the environment and foster environmental stewardship. Orienteering is a skill and a sport for all those who enjoy hiking and testing their wayfinding abilities. Luke Bernick's masterful orienteering course begins on Valley Crest Road with a detailed map kiosk (with QR code integration) that provides instructions on checkpoints along the way. Using a map and compass, participants navigate the course which meanders through challenging woodland and open field terrains. Scouts as well as the general public who use this orienteering course can test their navigational skills, which is not only fun, but encourages analytical and abstract thinking. For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Andy Kapetanakis, now a first year college student at Rowen University, chose to create a beautiful campsite at Valley Crest. He began by clearing the site and establishing a flagpole as the center piece of the area. He then built a fire ring with log seating for more than twenty scouts and leaders. There is also plenty of space in the adjacent woods for tents and overnight camping for scout groups (boys and girls) to enjoy and experience the great outdoors. This year alone, Valley Crest has been the host of several scout campouts, and we thank Andy for leading the way. "The benefits of these Eagle Scout Service Projects are tremendous," states Tom Curley, Round Table Commissioner for Hunterdon Arrowhead District and a Trustee of Valley Crest Preserve. "Not only did these young men receive an education in how to plan, execute and complete a project, they also provide an invaluable service to Valley Crest Preserve to educate future generations of scouts and school children through their efforts." Located at 14 Allerton Road in Lebanon, Valley Crest Farm & Preserve, a 501c3 organization, donates fresh produce to help people in need, maintains its farm and forest for education and recreation and encourages respect for farms and nature.
