Mailboxes which are hanging over the curb may be too close to the street, and run the risk of being damaged by a snow plow. P h O N E S c A M Residents are reminded to be alert for potential phone scams. Recently several Clinton Township residents have reported receiving phone calls from unknown subjects who claim to be a representative of a government agency, such as the IRS or the Treasury Department. The caller will advise the resident that they are delinquent with a payment and that a warrant has been issued for their (the resident's) arrest. The caller will then aggressively attempt to have the resident wire a payment in order to satisfy the "warrant." According to an October 15, 2015 press release from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the agency continues to receive reports of thousands of attempts every month in which individuals make unsolicited phone calls to residents fraudulently claiming to be IRS officials and demanding that the residents send them (the callers) cash via pre-paid debit cards. The callers may even know identifying information about their victims (such as their social security number), may make caller ID information appear as if the IRS is in fact calling, and they may even go so far as to send "confirming" emails. The press release goes on to state that the IRS will never request personal or financial information by email, text, or other social media and the IRS will not ask you for a credit card number over the phone. If you think that you may owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. For more information, visit www.IRS.gov. For all emergencies: (Police, Fire, Ambulance), please call: 9-1-1. For the Clinton Township Police, call: 908.735.6000. Questions? Call the Township Clerk: 908.735.8800, ext 204. Our Public Works drivers make every attempt to be mindful of mailboxes, but in the event your mailbox does sustain damage, the Township will either repair your mailbox or reimburse the homeowner up to $75 with proof of receipt.
