Here are a few things to do to get you started. 1. Remove screens from windows and install storm windows (helps reduce the cost to heat your home and prevents window sills from rotting). 2. Clean out gutters and downspouts (helps keeps ice dams from forming). 3. Insulate pipes in your home's crawl spaces and attic (keeps pipes from freezing; the more insulation, the better!) 4. Store firewood at least 30 feet away from your home (reduces chance of fire and termites). 5. Familiarize responsible family members with the gas main valve and other appliance valves (if you are not sure, have a plumber come out to teach you). 6. Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct, damper and space under the dryer (lint build up causes fires!). 7. Check the attic for adequate ventilation (check exterior wall to be sure ceiling insulation is not blocking outside air from soffit vents). 8. Clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter (keeping the hood clean of cooking grease helps keep a stovetop fire from spreading). 9. Check the water hoses on the clothes washer, refrigerator icemaker and dishwasher for cracks and bubbles (replace any hoses that show signs of leaking). 10. Test all ground-fault-circuit-interrupter (GFCI) outlets (these should be tripped and reset once a month; if they do not trip or reset, have the outlet changed by a qualified electrician). It will be well worth your time to take a few extra moments to check potential trouble spots in and around your home. Early detection could mean the difference between a simple mop-up job and major construction repairs. At the Legislative Update Breakfast hosted by HC Federated Republican Women (HCFRW) on Saturday, October 10, at Stanton Ridge Golf & Country Club, area residents were invited to meet legislators and hear critical issues facing our State. Senator Mike Doherty, Assemblymen John DiMaio, Erik Peterson, Jack Ciattarelli and Assemblywoman Donna Simon personally met the more than 75 guests in attendance and answered questions following their presentations. The legislators each spoke of various issues, including property taxes, transportation fund, school funding formula, pensions, post-retirement pensions, the gas tax and estate tax, VBM (Vote by Mail), among others.
