A marriage takes a lot of preventive maintenance, communication and repairs. Give and take is the golden rule in a couple's relationship. The Rolling Stones sum up relationships with the words, "No you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you find you get what you need."(abbreviated). The most important thing is that you need to be able to give within a relationship. In my couples counseling work, I find the most common ways for couples to ruin their relationship are: poor communication, emotional neglect, withholding praise and affection, lack of sexual interest, addictive behaviors, disagreements over finances, lack of cohesiveness in raising and disciplining children, infidelity and boredom. The most successful couples are great communicators. They know how to make compromises, spend quality time together and are supportive of each other's separate lives. If your marriage is declining, here are some suggestions: • Compromise! Compromise! Compromise with each other! • Put your energy into trying to connect with each other instead of wrestling to solve your problems together. Find a skilled couples' therapist who can guide you both to learn and use techniques to heal and strengthen your relationship. • Find a glimmer of hope in your marriage and let it grow. • Rekindle your sex life by reading books by Dr. Barry McCarthy: 1) "Sexual Awareness: Your Guide to Healthy Couple Sexuality" 2) "Kindling Desire" Lyn Siegel MSW, LCSW, MPH has been trained in couples and sex therapy by well-recognized professors of psychology including Dr. Stephanie Buehler (currently training) and Dr. Barry McCarthy. The concert is open to the community and there is no admission charge, although a suggested $10 donation per person is appreciated. All donations will help support the Jane Self Burnham Memorial Music Scholars Program, whose mission is to offer a venue for young students of music for the experience of performing sacred music in worship. There is no reserved seating; doors will open at 6:30pm for the 7:30pm concert, so plan to come early for the best seats. Many in the Hunterdon County area remember David Lockart, who served as the District Music Supervisor for the North Hunterdon Voorhees District and was choral director at North Hunterdon High School for more than 30 years. This is his first return to the area since his retirement to Delaware several years ago. We expect a good turnout from alumni and area families who fondly recall his easy spirit and kind manner, along with his ability to get our kids to sing at an extraordinary level. In their third year, Qvinctus (pronounced Kwin-toos) is a male vocal quintet comprised of five professional musicians from Northern Delaware. Qvinctus has enjoyed an active performance schedule including concerts throughout Delaware and Maryland, and now in New Jersey. Qvinctus performs a wide variety of repertoire from the Renaissance to contemporary, jazz and popular selections. For further information about the concert, please contact Janet Wulster at: janet.wulster@churchholyspirit.org.
