Most cars donated to non-profits are sold at auction and the proceeds given to the charity, but Family Promise of Hunterdon County accepts cars in good work- ing order so that they can be given directly to clients. In a county with limited public transportation, having a car is critical to get to work or school. Vehicles donated to Family Promise of HC that are in good working order will be donated to a client who is in need of safe, reliable transportation. Family Promise of HC only accepts cars in working condition and those cars are only donated to clients who need the car to get to work and/ or school. When a taxpayer donates a vehicle for which the claimed value is $500 or more, the precise deduction that can be claimed will depend on how the charity plans to use the vehicle. If the auto is sold by the nonprofit, the taxpayer will be able to deduct only the amount of gross proceeds from the sale. However, if the nonprofit donates the vehicle and does not receive any cash in return, the donor may deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. Family Promise is the only homeless shelter in Hunterdon County and pro- vides ancillary services to prevent homelessness and help stabilize homeless families and individuals after they are housed. The central program of Family Promise of HC is the overnight shelter network of 47 multi-denominational congregations and dedicated community volunteers who provide overnight/ weekend shelter, home-cooked meals, respect and companionship to families and individuals. Family Promise also offers comprehensive case management, licensed counseling services and a donation program, all designed to ensure long-term stability and success for client families. United Way of HC and the HC Family Success Center is hosting a Halloween Costume Swap & Fall Festival on Sat., Oct. 10 at the Flemington Woman's Club on Park Avenue. Prior to the event, donors can drop off gently used or new costumes at the United Way of HC at 4 Walter Foran Blvd, Suite 401 in Flemington (Mon.-Fri. from 9:00 am to 5:00 am or by appointment). Costumes can also be donated on the day of the event. Extra costumes available even if you do not have a costume to swap! Children can also participate in face painting and other fun activities and enjoy tasty fall treats! This event is completely free of charge. The National Halloween Costume Swap Day is a Green America project that helps raise awareness on ways to "go green" for Halloween.
