Seeds To Salsa
This hands-on participatory program lead by Ms. Venetia lasts for four weeks.
Each week brings opportunities for the students entering grades K-6th to
experience every step of the cycle of a plant's life, including composting and
preparing the soil, planting the seeds, nurturing the seeds to plants, harvesting,
and, finally, making the salsa. Campers grow all the ingredients, tomatoes ( fruit), bell
peppers (vegetable), onion (bulb) and cilantro (herb). Campers will learn to store salsa in
jars and to design their very own jar labels and take their personal jar of salsa home to enjoy!
The program encompasses new ways to learn about science, math, nutrition, team-work and
art. During the first session, while stirring their lunch leftovers into a compost,
one of the campers exclaimed, "This is soooo gross, and sooooo awesome!"
First Tee Golf
WFC Fitness Director Mr. Clinton introduces the fundamentals of the game
of golf. In a partnership with the National First Tee Program, WFC has acquired all the
equipment and activity plans to teach children K-8 the game, as well as the building blocks
to teamwork, self-discipline, respect, attaining goals, encouraging positive attitudes and
skills. The campers are divided into small age-appropriate groups and each session is 30-60
minutes, depending on age. The program will continue throughout the summer,
giving all campers to opportunity to participate.
