But a small percentage of people in the U. S. experience SAD depressive symptoms with the onset of summer. In warmer climates, SAD is actually more common in the summer than in the winter. If circadian rhythms are disturbed by sleep changes it can mean problems- even if you're only getting a few less or a few more hours of sun each day. Summer SAD shows up as agitation rather than the lethargy that is typically experienced in winter. If you are not yourself and are too jittery to eat, sleep, or follow your usual routine in the summer you may be experiencing SAD. Summer SAD can cause a loss of appetite, sleep problems, weight loss, and anxiety. Disruptions in routines can bring on summer SAD. For example, children on summer vacation who are changing routines and demanding more attention can contribute to SAD. The cost of summer vacations, summer camps, and babysitters can add to the stress of summer. Having to be seen in less clothing such as bathing suits or shorts can also impact mood. Suggestions for Coping with Summer Depression: • Get plenty of exercise to avoid depression • Eat sensibly and don't exercise or diet to an extreme • If you're already taking antidepressants talk to your doctor if your current dosage is not managing your symptoms • Try to make at least part of your vacation something that you'll really enjoy rather than filling obligations to family, friends and others • Stop comparing yourself to others whom you imagine are having more summer fun • If summer makes you manic, don't ignore your symptoms. Seek medical help instead. • Talk to your doctor about SAD. Your doctor may suggest that you stay out of bright light and heat and/or take antidepressants. While summer SAD is relatively rare, it can be dangerous and lead to suicidal thoughts/actions. • Lower Your Expectations. If you build up expectations for vacations and holidays, the disconnect between your expectation and reality can create disappointment, stress, or even depression. • Find time to wind down, read and relax. Limit caffeine and time spent with screens that can make falling asleep difficult. • Get plenty of sleep. Your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol when you're sleep deprived, which can contribute to depression and increase emotional sensitivity. • Try to keep normal sleep hours in the summer even if it means using heavy curtains to block out light. Eat outside or in bright light and get consistent sunlight in the morning to help reset your circadian clock.
