A L e t t e r f r o m Dr. Drucilla Clark, Superintendent of Schools Dear Parents and Community Members: It may be a surprise to many of you, but the Clinton Township School facilities are utilized by a large variety of other community groups over the course of the school year. In fact, approximately 941 activities in 146 days were scheduled by my assistant over the past year, not including all our own school events and sports activities. In years gone by, Girl and Boy Scouts used to meet in homes. Now they meet in our schools. Two hundred and fifty-five troop meetings were held in our buildings this past year. We have 1 dance troop, 9 theatre group meetings, 15 chess meetings, 25 Girls on the Run meetings, 26 outside Lacrosse meetings, 21 youth soccer events, 49 other basketball events (not Township Recreation) and 66 other one- or two - time group events. This does not include the Township Recreation Program which utilizes all 4 of our buildings for 258 basketball games and practices, 20 volleyball events, 109 karate meetings and 180 other recreation programs. This does not include the Township Summer Recreation Program. Our PTA books 33 events and our Foundation has about 8. You can see that all four buildings are busy and utilized in Clinton Township year round, nights and Saturdays. Things never really slow down. Of course we can't forget the before- and after-school child care program. You might think one building is utilized more than the others, but each of our four buildings is utilized by over 200 different activities, not part of the regular school use programs. Every group fills out facilities use forms, must meet insurance and legal requirements, must be approved by the Superintendent and calendars must be kept for custodial work and organization. This alone is becoming a major task that the employees of the district provide for the community. The district Board Office staff manages the facilities use for the Township's Recreation Programs. If the hours of use go beyond our normal custodial work day or weekends, the community group must pay for that additional custodial time. This use is an integral part of the community and has come to be depended upon by these various community groups. You may think they are only school buildings utilized by the children, but that is not so anymore. Parking lots are filled with cars, rooms filled with events, fields and gymnasiums in regular use. A public school is now a community facility that must still operate under public school regulations. It's good to see that space is not wasted, but we must also be mindful that security is ever in our thoughts. Many people enter and exit these buildings each night. We always ask that each group maintain security and follow the rules for safety. Our schools are busy places with busy schedules. They have become a symbol of the best and most active volunteers and workers in our community and we are so proud of them all!
