A couples' relationship can never be conflict- free, but by following some basic principles of healthy relationships it can prosper. Couples' relationships can be limited because there are unrealistic ex- pectations by one or both. One may be in a phase of wanting to be exceptionally close and the other needs space. There may be stress because the couple does not have sufficient shared thinking, feelings or opinions. Success Factors for Couples: • Open communication is important to successful relationships. Many couples seek therapy after problems have been building for years. Confiding, solv- ing relationship problems, asking for each other's opinion on choices, issues or problems make successful relationships. • Deal with Anger Directly. Cool off before you try to talk about what happened. • Romance Comes First: Being together socially is important. Have a date night where you each alternate selecting what to do but also enjoy an activity that you mutually enjoy. Intimacy is integral. Affection, excitement and mutual sexual pleasing requires open communication. Sexual frequency can be a source of dis- agreement that needs compromise. • Balance Spending time Together and Time on Your Own. Too much emotional closeness can feel like entanglement. Too little can create emotional distance. Shared interests such as hobbies, friendships, religious/spiritual affilia- tions, and community service can intensify closeness. Individuals need to have separate interests and friendships too. • Spending is intricate to relationships. Money wants and needs of each partner need to be negotiated. Money can create dissonance when one partner earns more or has greater needs. Joint financial planning is crucial. Lefkowitz on Thursday, April 2 at 7:30 pm at the Quakertown Firehouse, 67 Quakertown Road in Pittstown. The program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a State partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Arthur Lefkowitz explores a group of fascinating men who worked behind the scenes to help win American independence. Largely unknown and forgotten, these unselfish, hard-working patriots served at Washington's headquarters as volunteer aides-de-camp (personal assistants) and military secretaries. Their ranks included lawyers, doctors, artists, college students, businessmen and plantation owners. The presentation relates their accomplishments during the Revolutionary War and well into the 19th century. The lecture is based on the speaker's book, George Washington's Indispensable Men: The 32 Aides-de-Camp Who Helped Win American Independence. Arthur Lefkowitz is an independent researcher and historian specializing in the Revolutionary War era. Since 1998, he has written five books on the war, his first – The Long Retreat: The Calamitous American Defense of New Jersey, 1776 was named the best book of the year by the Revolutionary War Round Table and an Honor Book by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Lefkowitz writes about the Revolution because he believes it to be the most important event in American history, marking the beginning of the modern age in world history when men took action to decide how they would be governed. In the end, the rebels created an independent nation with a representative government that protected the rights of its citizens.
