That's the year they turn into adults in the eyes of the law. While eighteen-year-olds are entitled to a lot more rights and privileges than they were just one year earlier, they also face more responsibili- ties. Here are some things eighteen-year-olds – and their parents – should know before the big day arrives. At eighteen, you can: • purchase a car, a house and even stock • enter into legally binding contracts • vote • serve on a jury • drive without restrictions • be sued • be sentenced to jail if convicted of illegal activities At eighteen, you must: • file and pay your own income taxes • register for the National Selective Services, if you are a male Parents of eighteen-year-olds face a number of changes, too. Perhaps the biggest ones are those relating to medical and financial information. • Your child may be covered under your family health insurance until the age of 26, according to the 2010 U.S. Health Reform Act. However, just because you pay your child's insurance, don't expect to be privy to information regarding his or her health. The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, better known as HIPAA, maintains that health matters are between your eighteen-year-old and his or her health care provider. If you want access to that information, your child must sign a release granting his or her permission. • The fact that you are paying for your child's college education does not entitle you to access to his or her grades or school records. Like- wise, you don't have a right to information regarding your student's tuition or housing bills either. However, most schools will allow stu- dents to grant their parents access to their financial accounts. The eighteenth birthday is a time when kids take their first steps toward independence and parents can experience the fruits of their child-rearing efforts.
