"Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!" – Charles Dickens m a n a g i n g o u t o f w i n t e R d e p R e S S i o n The days are getting shorter! December 21 is the Winter Solstice- the shortest day of the year. Consequently many people experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a mood disorder that starts in November and December. It is believed that less sunlight in the fall and winter can cause hormonal changes, particularly less of the chemical serotonin that regulates mood during fall and winter. The most common symptoms are depression, fatigue and weight gain. People can also experience various other symptoms such as sad mood, diminished interest, changes in appetite, sleep difficulties, lack of energy, irritability, worthlessness, trouble concentrating and withdrawal from friends and family. "Managing out of winter depression" requires resources that will help to get past the depressive mood. Balancing Omega 3s and Omega 6s through diet and supplements can help with seasonal depression by reducing brain inflammation that can cause depression. Omega 3s are usually lacking and can be replaced by eating salmon, tuna and halibut or taking fish oil orally. A trained psychotherapist can help to identify the triggers that are leading to depression. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an effective psychological treatment that helps by reprocessing bothersome memories that trigger seasonal depression. Other treatments for depression include cognitive-behavioral therapy, aerobic exercise 5-6 times a week, yoga, improving food choices, natural sunlight or using a full/natural spectrum light box (Verilux.com). Some people may also need antidepressants to lift seasonal depression. The Donate Life float and its honored participants are the centerpiece of a national campaign that leads up to the 2015 Rose Parade, themed "Inspiring Stories." The float includes a "Dedication Garden" filled with thousands of roses. Each will have a personalized message. NJ Sharing Network is one of the Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) taking part. Each OPO has reached out to the President and CEO of the hospitals in their designated service area to dedicate a rose, which will be a part of the float. Robert P. Wise, President and CEO of Hunterdon Healthcare, wrote a handwritten message that will be included in the float. Tune into the Rose Parade on New Years day to see the Donate Life float! "Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plentious in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas." – Calvin Coolidge
