Let's face it. We rely on gift cards because they're convenient – one size fits all and you can't go wrong with the color. But before you buy, be aware of the risks involved. Gift cards are big business. In 2012, consumers in the U.S. put $112.3 billion* on gift cards and by 2015, they are expected to account for 18% of all holiday shopping. Like any big business, gift cards have attracted a number of scams, which are effective because the cards are purchased well in advance of being used and the deceptions are not discovered until it is too late. In order to ensure you receive the full value of your purchase, here are a few things to remember: • Purchasing cards from online auctions can be risky as some resellers have been known to overstate the value of the cards. Others purchase cards with stolen credit cards and resell them for cash. Once the credit cardholder discovers the theft and cancels the credit card, the gift card is left without value. • Cards on public displays are easily accessible by people who know how to access the card's identifying information. They can then use this information to steal the money you load onto the card and, because it's a gift, the theft won't be discovered until the recipient attempts to use the card. Examine both sides of the card for signs of tampering before purchasing. Better yet, purchase retailer specific cards from the retailer they are associated with. • After purchasing a card, ask the salesperson to scan it to confirm it is valid and contains the correct amount of money. • Hold on to your receipt until the card has been used in full. • Register the card if possible. • Never provide personal information when purchasing gift cards. You are not applying for credit, so there is no need to provide your social security number, bank account or other personal information.
