We remind our students about what that word means. Teachers discuss the words in class and we share the words with our parents to also discuss the words at home. When the words were first selected, we were looking for words that were age appropriate, teachable and observable. Each month, teachers look for students who show us the meaning of the word in their every day actions. Students do not know they have been nominated by a teacher until the end of the month when we announce all the nominated students. Besides receiving a certificate with their name and the month's word, students also get a copy of the nomination form, so they can see what the teach - ers saw and see what the students did to get the recognition. We also post a copy of the certificate on our main bulletin board so other students can see the names of the winners. In September, the word was Friendship. The motto of Patrick McGaheran School is "Where Friendships Grow" so Friendship is a great way to start the year off. In October, the word was Respect. November's word was Harmony and we needed to help the students understand that this word doesn't just refer to singing. Harmony also means agreement, peace, fellowship and cooperation. What a powerful word! Around the holidays, the December word is Generosity. January's word is Courage, February's is Kindness. March's word is Confidence, April's is Responsibility, May's is Empathy and June's is Honesty. These words are definitely age appropriate and teachable. We hope you can observe these words in our school and in our students. Feel free to model any of our words." – John Scott, Interim Principal (taking over for Mary Postma, who will be back in December) S p R u C e R u n S C h o o l Each month at Spruce Run School, students learn about our words and themes of the month and how to apply them in words and actions. For the month of December, our word is "generosity" and our theme is "I AM a friend." Students read stories and discuss ways to be generous and to help others, and demonstrate how they are a true friend to others. At SRS, we hold monthly All School Meetings called SEED Meetings. SEED stands for "Student Excellence Equals Distinction." After saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing our school song together, we recognize students who have gone above and beyond in bringing the word of the month to life. Students are recognized with a certificate at our assemblies, and first graders enjoy a special lunch with the principal, Mrs. Goad. Our youngest students are so eager to learn and to demonstrate these characteristics, and we are so proud to support them in this endeavor. School Service: The students and staff of CTMS continue to reach out and provide service for the community and those in need. This month we participated in two service projects. The CTMS Student Ambassadors collected over 60 pounds of donated candy to support "Sweets for Soldiers." This candy will be donated through Operation Care Package to add some- thing "sweet" to the care packages prepared for our troops! We thank everyone who participated in this wonderful effort! R o u n d V a l l e y S C h o o l November was a time to honor our Veterans! Students, teachers, and staff decorated stars to honor their family members, friends, or neighbors who served our country in the military. Names, ranks, the branch of service and years served were included on each star. Some also included the veteran's picture. The stars were displayed throughout the school to recognize and honor their service to our country. A flag raising cer - emony took place followed by a pre- sentation in the gymnasium by a parent who shared the meaning and importance of Vet - eran's Day. Music from each military branch was played and the veteran's who served in that branch stood tall when they heard their song. November's Word of the Month: Compassion. Thank You Veterans! December is a time of generosity at Round Valley School. The Word of the Month for December happens to be Generosity. Once again, students demonstrated this by collecting hats, mittens, games, books, and balls for students in Camden. The now 28 year old tradition continues! Bees were a buzzin' once again at RVS. Spelling Bees and Geography Bees! December is Geography Month, students competed in Rounds 1 and 2 of the Geography Bee, look for more information in the upcoming months. Spelling Bee Round 1 took place in November, look for the final results in next month's publication! The musical talent of our students shined through once again during our Winter Concert which took place at the Clinton Township Middle School. It is so lovely to hear the songs and learn the origins of the musical selections. Enjoy the holidays!
