Many people think our offices close for the summer, but it is a busy time for district offices. Let me give you a peek behind the scenes at what is happening during July and August in our district… The Business Office closes out the previous year's books and starts our new year July 1. Purchase orders are coming in for text- books, supplies and repairs of all kinds. They all must be signed off on by the Business Administrator and the Superintendent before purchased and all purchasing laws must be followed. Personnel are being interviewed to fill retirement spots and maternity leaves. All their certifications must be checked and documented, as well as criminal history and background checks completed. Interviews are conducted at each school and finalized by the Superintendent, then recommended to the Board of Education for a final approval. The Business Office is also working on busing and bus routes, which are constantly impacted by new and changing registra- tions. It is best not to wait for the first day of school or the day before to register new students. It can impact our ability to get you on a bus for the first days, since it can easily change an entire route. Facilities projects are at their height in the summer months. Working with architects, the town permit process, contractors, bidding and quotes are all part of a busy summer day in the Board Office. Of course, there is management of the summer cleaning of each building; gym floors need to be polished, boilers and alarms inspected and checked, classrooms scrubbed and painted and many more little things that make four different buildings work when filled with students and staff each year. The Business Office manages all of this each summer. This year, we have a new Business Administrator, Anthony Juskiewicz, joining us. Anthony Juskiewicz is an experienced admin- istrator and some may recognize his name from previous experience in High Bridge. Mrs. Spitzer has moved on to another opportunity and we are looking forward to another positive year in Clinton Township. The Superintendent is the Chief School Administrator so all departments report to her. State reports are required on just about everything from School Choice to Professional Development to Mentor- ing Plans for new Teachers and generated through the Superintendent's Office. Board Committee work continues over the summer, as do agendas and Board of Education meetings. Our two summer Board meeting dates are July 28 and August 25–we hope to see you there! New policies, regulations, curriculum work and development and training for new staff, as well as Back to School events are already in the planning stages. Leadership meets regularly to set goals and plan for the coming school year. We also debrief on the past year, what we learned and need to improve upon as well. We review data from tests and writing samples and utilize it to make decisions for professional development and programming. We really spend time on what we can do better and help our staff and students grow and learn. As Superintendent, I consider my- self learner in chief and work to lead a process of introspection and, hopefully, innovation. I am always thinking, how can we do and be better for our kids? Summer is definitely the time for everyone to take a moment to reflect on the past and move forward for the future. That is why September is always a new beginning for educators. It is our January, New Year. Summer in the Board Office is busy, but we are happy in our work! See you in September!
