During exercise even small amounts of sweat loss can hinder performance. To pre- vent any adverse effect, begin all workouts optimally hydrated. Two-thirds of an individual's total bodyweight is water. Water provides structure to body parts, protects tissue and lubricates joints. It also aids in digestion and helps eliminate waste products. Fluid balance is simply the result of intake of fluids versus output. An adequate intake of 16 cups (128 ounces) is recommended for men and 12 cups (96 ounces) for women. This reflects your total fluid need for the day includ- ing sweat loss; varying from one exerciser to another. Don't rely on thirst alone for taking fluids in; as we age our thirst mechanism becomes less effective. Make an effort to drink every 1 to 2 hours. When you are well hydrated your urine is pale yellow in color. Darker color indicates dehydration and the need to increase your fluid intake. Be aware that some vitamin supplements can darken the color of urine as well. Many of us start the day with caffeine in the form of coffee, tea or other caf- feine containing beverages. Those beverages can enhance exercise perfor- mance but are also considered a diuretic. Some studies have found that while caffeine containing beverages stimulate urine production, it is not greater than when water or other fluids are consumed. Although dehydration is far more common, it is also possible to over hydrate. Hyponatremia is a potentially dangerous condition. The sodium levels in the body drop during or after prolonged exercise due to a combina- tion of fluid overload and sweat loss. Some of the signs of this are rapid weight gain after exercise, bloated abdomen, swollen hands and feet, headache, dizziness, lack of coordination, nausea and vomiting. This is best prevented by drinking to minimize or replace sweat loss without overdrinking and choosing a sodium containing sports drink for prolonged exercise sessions. Begin your day with a focus on hydration. Consume liquids such as water, juice, milk and foods containing water. A moderate amount of caffeine is fine. Carry water with you at all times but don't over do it. Make sure you stay hydrated during your exercise sessions and in turn you will benefit from a safe, fun and healthy workout!
