Those funds will directly benefit individuals and families in our community affected by domestic and sexual abuse by providing them with a wide range of free, confidential programs and services. The event, held in April at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Bedminster, drew several prominent officials, including Lt. Governor Kim Guad- agno, U.S. Representative Leonard Lance and State Assemblyman Erik Peterson, according to Gary Zell, president of SAFE's board of directors. Zell began the evening by thanking the tireless volunteers and generous sponsors and donors who made the evening possible. He introduced the 2014 Honorees, Lisa and Peter Verniero, by stating that, "Their dedication to our com- munity and those in need is inspiring to us all, and we are so fortunate to have this opportunity to offer them our thanks." Zell also introduced the new Executive Director of SAFE in Hunterdon, Karen Carbonello, remarking that everyone at SAFE is looking forward to sharing her vision for years to come. The elected officials who spoke -- Guadagno, Lance and Peterson -- each offered their congratulations to the Vernieros and recognized their legacy of selfless service to Hunterdon County and the State of New Jersey. Peter Verniero put the evening into context, reminding us that in 2011 there were over 70,000 acts of domestic violence reported New Jersey, with many of those acts committed against children. That roughly translates into one act of domestic violence every 7 and one-half minutes. "Our home is supposed to be our sanctuary of safety; when that safety is violated, our entire community suffers," Peter declared. "SAFE provides support for victims and our community through both intervention and education, and tonight we recognize their stories of survival and their resilience and courage," he added. SAFE in Hunterdon needs your support. The Evening of Awareness 2015 committee is forming and we invite you to contact us at SAFEinHunter- don.org or 908-788-7666 to become part of this unique opportunity to support SAFE. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Red Shoe Fashion Show and Luncheon on June 6th. Thank you for empowering all people in our community to be SAFE in Hunterdon.
