Prom and graduation will be here before you know it--if you're the parent of a high school teen, are you a member of the Safe Homes Directory? The Safe Homes program is a national initiative designed to coordinate pledges from local families who agree to host only supervised, drug and alcohol-free gatherings for teens at their homes. Safe Homes parents agree to cooperate with schools, law enforcement and young people to create a healthy atmosphere in which the use of alcohol and other drugs is no longer the "norm." Safe Homes parents are taking a stand against the alarming increase in alcohol and drug use among our youth. Safe Homes parents pledge to: • not allow parties and gatherings when they are not at home • not serve or allow youth under the legal drinking age of 21 to consume alcohol in their house or on their property • not allow the use of illicit drugs at their home or on their property Safe Homes pledge forms are distributed to all high school parents by each of the county high schools at the start of each school year. All parents who complete a pledge form are added to the Safe Homes Directory, which parents can then access to see if the home where their child is going to a party has also pledged to be alcohol and drug-free. The Directory can be found on the Safe Communities Coalition website, www.safecoalition.org. Only Safe Homes parents have access to the online Directory. For more information about the Safe Homes Directory, or if you are interested in signing up, please contact Cathy Canterino of the Safe Com - munities Coalition at 908.782.3909. Once a parent has completed a pledge form and your family has been added to the Directory, you will receive an email with information on how to register online to access the Directory. The goal of the Safe Communities Coalition is to live in a safe and healthy commu- nity by eliminating drug use, underage drinking and prescription drug abuse. Through wide-spread community collaboration, environmental change and community education in Hunterdon and Somerset counties, the Safe Communities Coalition will address areas of concern including, but not limited to, reducing Rx drug abuse across the lifespan, underage drinking, tobacco, marijuana, heroin and other drug use.
