This event is hosted by Spring Run School and the CORE Values program at the Center for Educational Advancement. This presentation is for par- ents, caregivers or individuals from ages 4 to adult who are interested in improv- ing social skills. Signs of social skills needing improvement include difficulties such as: making and/or keeping friends, making conversation, understanding other points of view, interpreting body language and facial expressions, being flexible, etc. Ms. Fichtelberg will discuss "Social Thinking ® " and the "Bend Your Brain" approach to social development and learning. Social Thinking ® and other related ideas are the missing pieces to social difficulties. It teaches: why and how you should say or do things, perspective taking, flexibility ("bending your brain"), looking at the big picture, why thinking about others is important and why people have positive or negative thoughts about you based upon what you say/do. The presentation offers many "Bend Your Brain" TM activities that can be used at home and school to help develop social thinking. Spring Run School is CEA's NJ-certified private secondary school serving stu- dents with autism and multiple disabilities. SRS provides additional resources and services to students on the autism spectrum and has enhanced their academ- ic and transitional services for all special needs students who face greater social and technological challenges as they become adults. Spring Run is introducing a new after school program starting in late April and will offer an extended sum- mer program for 2014. CEA's new CORE Values program focuses on the needs of individuals with Aspergers Syndrome and other communication disabilities, who are 18 and over and out of school and have the desire and technical skills to work, but may not have the social skills and confidence to succeed in regular employment. The CORE Values Program incorporates unique experiences that engage participants and accelerate the development of work preparedness skills.
