Even though the location has changed, the Relay will still be a free and hilarious family event that supports SAFE in Hunterdon and addresses serious issues in a lighthearted way. In 2013, 12 five-man teams participated in a short-leg relay in heels, which raised over $12,000 for SAFE, and was a very empowering experience for the volunteer organizers, relayers and spectators. Although the morning's highlights are the showmanship and friendly competition of the Relayers, an all-female Mayors Contingent commenting on outfits and team spirit as they strut across the Red Carpet, a photo booth, music, 50/50 raffle and trophy ceremony, make it an incredibly fun morning. Please support the Men in Heels on May 17 from 10:00 am to noon, or make a donation at www.crowdrise.com/MenInHeelsRelay. For more information and to see our roster of teams, please visit our Crowdrise site and Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MenInHeelsRelayFundraiser, or call Leanne at: 908.337.4753. The Men in Heels Relay 2014 Sponsors are: Groendyke Associates of Califon, Great Clips Salons of Clinton and Flemington, Prestige Wealth Management of Flemington, Loumarc Signs of Hillsborough and PNC Bank. All of these activities place a lot of strain on the spine. Popular belief is to sit ram rod straight or to sit in one of those chairs designed by ergonomists with the built in lumbar support. Dr. Stuart McGill, considered to be one of the world's foremost authorities on the spine and low back disor - ders, has stated there is no single position that can relieve the stressors placed on the discs and other tissues in the back. Rather, Dr. McGill suggested by changing your sitting position the stressors migrate from one tissue to another thus minimizing the risk of overload to any one area of the back. He goes on to state that one should sit no more then 10 minutes in any single position and no more then 50 minutes overall, before standing. Once standing, one should allow 20 seconds for the muscles to relax before reaching for the ceiling with outstretched hands to re-align the spine. Statistics bear out that back injury is the biggest reason for absences at the workplace and the foremost reason for doctor visits. Sitting crossed legged, moving to different positions on the chair tucking one leg under you and yes, even putting your feet up on the desk can shift the loads from one tissue to another in your back. If standing at your desk makes you conspicuous or uncomfortable, stand when you are answering the phone. Leaning forward over your desk or work station puts your spine in flexion (bent forward) and places increased stresses on the intervertebral discs. This posture has caused disc herniations in laboratory settings. We can all be mindful of our postures and body movements throughout the day to stop crushing our spines.
