I mportance of S trength T raining Strength training is exercise that incorporates the use of weights or other resistance apparatus within one's exercise program. Whether you work out on weight machines, use hand-held free weights, resistance bands or participate in strength training classes, you will benefit greatly from doing this type of exercise. Most of us know there are benefits of cardiovascular exercise like taking walks, riding bikes and swimming; however, we may not all know the benefits of strength training. Participating in strength training activities can greatly impact the body. It increases the strength of our muscular system and helps with bone density which has a positive impact on the skeletal system. Our bodies in turn will be stronger and more durable. Stronger muscles and healthier bones allow us to participate in additional daily activities and can help prevent injuries/falls. Having stronger muscles helps the ability of our bodies to have better balance/awareness and can help with posture. Not to mention the aesthetics of strength training; the more toned the muscles are the leaner the body will look. Strength training as part of an exercise program is recommended at least 2 to 3 times a week. In order to have a well balanced program, it is important to remember to train muscles in the upper and lower body regions along with core strengthening exercises. The key factor with strength training, however, is to make sure muscle groups are not being worked on back to back days. Either train using the full circuit of machines every other day or alternate upper and lower body. The critical part of strength training if using weight machines is to make sure all of the adjustments on the machine are correctly set for you individually. Before beginning a strength training program that utilizes the weight machines, it is recommended you have a consultation/orientation with an exercise professional.
