W h e r e H av e A l l the Butterflies Gone? For the students at Whitehouse Preparatory School, September marks the start of school as well as a time to observe and learn about butterflies. A Monarch Waystation since 2010, Whitehouse Prep is surrounded by milkweed and flowering plants that attract a variety of butterflies. But this year there are not as many Monarch butterflies and the students are wondering why? Some suggest it might be due to over-development in Mexico where Monarchs over winter or the lack of milkweed host plants. Despite this, the inquisitive students and staff at Whitehouse Prep searched long and hard for Monarch butterfly eggs and caterpillars and found many that eventually turned into chrysalis and then beautiful butterflies. Judith Serra, Head of School, thinks this is a wonderful project for the children that "teaches them not only about nature and caring for animals, but also about the environment and how their actions can have a direct impact on the lives of others." Whitehouse Prep is a premier pre-school offering full, three-quarter and half day sessions as well as extended day options for children ages 3 to 6. Visit us online at: www.WhitehousePrep.org. Absorption Rates (the number of months needed to sell off all the current inventory on the market based on the current rate in which homes are selling) is the most important stat in the real estate world. Between 5 and 7 month's supply, the market is even. Above 7 month's supply, we're in a "Buyer's Market" with downward pressure on the price–high supply and a low demand. Below 5 month's supply, we're in a "Seller's Market"–high demand and a low supply. Local agent Vincent J. Currently, nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and 1 in 3 (79 million) people have prediabetes, a condition where blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. About the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program: • The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program is a lifestyle modification program that helps people reduce their risk for Type 2 diabetes by helping them learn about eating healthier, increasing physical activity and other behavior changes. • The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program is based on the National Institute of Health led, CDC supported, Diabetes Prevention Program study that showed programs that helped people lose 5-7 percent of body weight through healthier eating and increased physical activity that could reduce the number of cases of diabetes by 58 percent. • The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long program with 16 one-hour classroom sessions, then monthly maintenance. A trained lifestyle coach helps participants learn strategies for healthy eating, physical activity and other lifestyle changes. The goal is for participants to lose 7 percent of their body weight and increase their physical activity to 150 minutes per week. • After the initial 16 sessions, participants meet monthly for up to a year for added support to help them maintain their progress with the ultimate goal of reducing their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. • The HCYMCA is on the cutting edge of health care delivery – proving that a community-based organization can effectively disseminate an evidence-based prevention program on a large scale and achieve significant results. Participants in the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program lost an average of 4.8 percent of body weight. For more info, contact the HCYMCA at 908.782.1044 x 4937.
