The dictionary defines it as: The activity or craft of sewing and stitching through multiple layers of fabric and padding to create a design or a warm bed cover. However, AI tells us: Quilting is widely recognized as an art form. While it started as a practical craft to make warm bedding, it has evolved into a respected branch of fiber and visual arts where makers use color, shape, and texture to express ideas. How about we take the month of October to decide? On October 8 at our luncheon we will seat a panel of quilters to discuss the matter. However, these are not random quilters. These ladies have a strong and present tie to our Dillon Library. If you've ever noticed a beauty of a quilt adorning a wall on the main floor, appropriately displayed behind glass, you'll see a quilt that was made to commemorate the Bicentennial of America (7/4/1976) 50 years ago. Our panelists were responsible for creating several of those squares and will join us to talk about the experience and further honor our American heritage by telling "the story behind the square". I'll share how this came about. One of our members, Barbara O'Connell, commented to me that she had made one of the squares in the quilt upstairs. "What??" After picking myself up off the floor, we went upstairs and she showed me her lovely square. All the while, one thing was going through my mind "We have to do a program about this." Gratefully, Barbara was willing and she contacted some of her fellow quilters, also willing, and now it's on the calendar!!) Ladies, I maintain that we have treasures to learn about and celebrate, right here, within our own WF community. Quilters Luncheon: Thursday, October 8 at noon. Dillon Library, Bedminster. Museum promo: "As the premier institution of its kind in the region, The American Folk Art Museum is New York City's only museum exclusively dedicated to celebrating self-taught artists. Its collection holds over 8,000 pieces spanning four centuries, featuring everything from intricate hand- woven quilts and Shaker furniture to legendary "outsider art" pieces by Henry Darger and Bill Traylor." Plus, it's located on the Upper West Side with plenty of restaurants (and good shopping) nearby. Good weather, quick lunch – more shopping. Bad weather, longer lunch! The museum has a great eclectic gift shop as well. Trip to the American Folk Art Museum: Thursday, October 22. Bus leaves Dillon Library at 9:00 am. Return pickup at the museum, 3:00 pm. But, what if your child gets injured? Who is liable? The answer depends on whether the injury was the result of the inherent risks associated with the sport or if it was the result of negligence, unsafe equipment, or a lack of supervision. Most organizations sponsoring extracurricular sports – schools, private clubs, community centers – have a duty of care, meaning they have a responsibility to protect and supervise the participants. If not, they may be held liable for any injuries that occur as a result. Before children can sign up for a sport, parents usually are asked to sign waivers. These waivers mostly address the inherent risks of the sport and do not protect against gross negligence, intentional misconduct, or preventable and unsafe environments. For an organization to be held liable, negligence must be proven. That negligence can be providing unsafe facilities or poorly maintained equipment, or it can be a lack of proper supervision. If the equipment, venue or transportation is provided by a third party, that party may share in the liability or be found fully liable depending on circumstances Individuals – coaches, staff, instructors – may be held liable if they pushed a participant beyond what would be considered reasonable limits, left the children unsupervised, failed to stop dangerous activities, or ignored signs of an obvious injury. To file a negligence claim, you must prove the organization or individual had a duty of care and that the injury was a direct result of that duty being breached. You must also show that the injured party suffered real harm in terms of medical expenses, pain and suffering, or long-term disability. If your child gets injured get immediate medical attention, report the injury, and document all events surrounding the injury.
