Our museum will educate the public about the deep division within the population and the severity of the civil conflict that played out across Hunterdon County and New Jersey throughout our nation's turbulent struggle for independence. Taking a few precautions, however, can keep your adventure from turning into a nightmare. Road hazards are common contributors to vacation injuries, especially when traveling to remote or foreign areas. Among the hazards travelers face are: • Poorly maintained vehicles • Unfamiliar roads • Driving on the opposite side of the road • The combination of cars, bikes, buses, scooters, taxis, trucks and animals sharing the road • Sharp curves and cliffs without guardrails • Insufficient lighting • Travel fatigue These plus speed and unfamiliar traffic patterns lead to an increased risk of accidents. Even pedestrians are at greater risk for injury especially when crossing busy intersections or distracted by the sites. The risk of slip and falls also increases due to uneven pavements, steep staircases, poor lighting and slippery conditions that follow the rain. To help mitigate these risks, research your destination before arrival. Understand the local conditions and safety concerns. Locate the nearest medical facilities. Watch your step when walking and be careful to avoid busy roads when riding scooters and bikes. Remember to stay hydrated and rested because both dehydration and fatigue can affect balance and awareness, adding to your injury risk. If using a rideshare service or if your vacation plans include adventure or water activities, be sure to book with a qualified service and reputable licensed guide. Don't proceed with the ride or activity if the driver or guide seems inexperienced or impaired. Remember that even the best laid plans can sometimes fail. If you do get injured or have an accident, prioritize your health. Just like at home: • Seek medical attention at the first sign of illness or injury • Document what happened and gather information • Notify the appropriate authorities • Follow up on medical treatment • Make arrangements to get back home Most importantly, trust your instincts.
