Dear Ladies, They were outstanding and dashing, each with books and stories and
even plays written about them. In the saga of the founding of our nation they stand out as
icons. Among the Founding Fathers, the "principals" Jefferson, Hamilton, Franklin and George
Washington have been celebrated and honored with every possible distinction, however, there
was one, known as the "Atlas of Independence" (led the faction in Congress pushing for a formal
break from Britain in 1775-76) for one reason or another, had not achieved cultural icon status.
History tells us that John Adams was cranky, troublesome, vain and tactless. He
was also principled, brave and brilliant! And... he had a remarkable wife. The
marriage of John and Abigail Adams has been cited as one of the great love stories of all time.
It was defined by devotion, passionate love and a strong intellectual partnership. The "Dearest
Friends" were a powerful union.
Historian David McCullough took on the life of John Adams in an eponymous,
non-fiction biography that reads with the ease of a novel. So engaging and revelatory
was the story of this man that it won the Pulitzer Prize and was made into a highly acclaimed
(13 Emmys & 4 Golden Globes) television series. Leave it to the power of HBO to catapult this
neglected Founder right into the spotlight (where he has always belonged) and his Abigail along
with him as his political advisor, advocate for women's rights, for education and the abolition of
slavery. Through the artistry of Carol Simon Levin, Abigail Adams will pay a visit to
Women's Forum! Join us for: Our Luncheon With Abigail: Thursday, May 7 at noon.
