C O M Happy PASSOVER! 5 P a r k i n s o n ' s D i s e a s e a n D r o c k s t e a D y B o x i n g By: Jen Magro - Certified ACE Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Rock Steady Boxing Head Coach April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, and April 11 is World Parkinson's Day. Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, coordination and cognitive function. The exact cause of Parkinson's disease is still not fully understood. In most cases, it appears to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. A small percentage of cases are linked to specific genetic mutations, but for most people there is no single identifiable cause. Researchers believe factors such as aging, exposure to certain toxins, and inherited susceptibility may all play a role. The treatments for this disease consist of medications, deep brain stimulation, focused ultrasound and exercise, including boxing, which some studies suggest may be neuro-protective possibly delaying the progression of Parkinson's. One innovative and increasingly popular exercise program is Rock Steady Boxing. This non-contact boxing program was specifically designed for people living with Parkinson's disease. Participants perform boxing-inspired workouts that include punching drills, footwork, balance training, strength exercises, and agility movements. These workouts are adapted to each participant's ability level and focus on improving coordination, posture, speed, and overall fitness. Research and participant experiences suggest programs like Rock Steady Boxing can help: • Improve balance and coordination • Increase strength and mobility • Enhance reaction time and agility • Boost confidence and social connection Just as importantly, these classes provide a supportive community where participants can encourage each other and stay motivated. Although Parkinson's disease presents challenges, many people continue to live active and fulfilling lives with the right combination of medical care, exercise, and support. Staying physically active, maintaining social connections, and working closely with healthcare providers can make a significant difference in managing symptoms and preserving independence. Programs such as Rock Steady Boxing demonstrate that movement is powerful medicine — and that fighting back against Parkinson's can happen one punch, one step, and one class at a time. Classes are held at the Clinton Wellness Center four times a week. Please email Jen Magro at: jmagro@hhsnj.org or call: 908.735.7504 for more information.
