Whatever "Ides" that March can serve up doesn't seem very intimidating right now. Remember the Ides of March? It was the famously ominous date in Shakespeare's play, Julius Ceasar (Act 1, Scene 2), spoken by a soothsayer to Caesar as a warning of his impending assassination on March 15. It serves as a foreshadowing of doom, as Caesar ignores the warning and is killed by conspirators on that date. Historically, it's been associated with betrayal, bad omens, and unavoidable calamities. But honestly, if Caesar had experienced one of our current winter mornings, he might have gladly traded the Senate for a decent pair of thermal socks. "Beware the Ides of March," the soothsayer warned. To which we might reply, "Beware the wind chill," because nothing says impending doom quite like trying to navigate your way over an glassy driveway to scrape the ice off your windshield, while braving the fierce wind that has many of you thinking "Florida." (Which, by the way, has been super-cold as well, I'm hearing from friends and family down there). There's something poetically dramatic about March pretending it's almost spring while simultaneously unleashing weather fit for a Norse saga. The calendar insists we're inching toward daffodils and sunshine, yet the atmosphere has clearly sided with Brutus. The wind stabs us in the back, and the sun makes a brief appearance, only to vanish like a conspirator muttering, "Et tu, weather app?" So as the Ides approach, we fear more weeks of frostbite and treacherous sidewalks. And just when we think March has exhausted its flair for drama, along comes St. Patrick's Day. It marches in with shamrocks and parades, and boldly declares that everyone is a bit Irish for 24 hours. It's the one day we defiantly wear bright green as if to challenge winter itself: "You may have snow, but we have glittery leprechaun hats." Nothing says resilience like celebrating spring while bundled up in green clothing, clutching a cup of something warm, while insisting that this is festive and not at all frostbite-adjacent. The bagpipes in downtown Clinton will play bravely through the bitter weather, yet somehow there's genuine cheer. Because if we can survive the Ides of March and still toast to luck and laughter, then surely spring can't be too far behind, right? -Julie Flunn ☘ EQUAL HOUSING LENDER | MEMBER FDIC unitybank.com/cdspecials Grow your avings with us!
