Trusting you are all well and ready to take on the year ahead with inspired resolutions, joy, and a zest for learning! OUR AMERICA: 2026 is a big anniversary year for our country ~ 250 years of our American Independence ~ and we are going to be honoring and celebrating our beloved nation all year long. THE HISTORY: For the first three months of '26 Women's Forum is going academic! We'll be reviewing the journey to the birth of our nation with a six part documentary series that luckily came our way when I started researching. Yes, we studied our American history in grammar school or high school – some of you may have been history majors, and our newer citizens as part of their naturalization process studied U.S. history as well. However, a review of our nation's origins from the perspective of 250 years hence is such a thrilling story, sure to lead to some good discussion and most of all, an even greater appreciation of the right to call ourselves Americans. The series is artfully crafted with dramatic readings from actual letters and diaries of the period as well as live action recreations. The production is from 1997 and you'll recognize the faces of some of today's "seasoned" popular actors in their "youthful innocence"! The shop will be closed from January 12 through March 9, 2026. We are sorry to disappoint our loyal customers but our director is going away and we do not have anyone willing to take on that task. Our volunteer base has gotten smaller. We hope when we reopen in the Spring that anyone who would like to volunteer a few hours a week or month might come forward. We will be accepting donations up until January 10. After that we will not be accepting donations and we ask that you honor this request. Signs will be posted making this clear and the porch will not be open for donations. The North Hunterdon Thrift Shop or Habitat for Humanity are two other places where you can donate while we are not open. Any questions, please call: 908.295.1132 or email: mjeanne1947@gmail. com. We thank you for your understanding and hope to see you in the Spring! Combined, Anthony P. Kearns and Victor A. Rotolo have been serving the local community for over 60 years. You already have a will, Power of Attorney, and a medical directive? Great! But when was the last time you reviewed them? The rule of thumb, barring any significant life changes—marriage/ divorce/separation; birth or adoption of a child; death of a beneficiary or representative; acquisition of new assets; loss or incurrence of debt—is to review your estate plan every five years or so. It's also important to review these documents if you move out of state or out of the country. Estate laws vary by state. Decisions you make to achieve the optimal outcome may not hold up in your new home state based on its estate tax laws. And if you move to another country, you may have to start all over again. Different countries have different legal jurisdictions, tax implications, executor authorities, property ownership rules, and family law variations which could make a will created in the U.S. inadequate or, worse, unenforceable. A well-drafted estate plan should include a Last Will & Testament; a Power of Attorney for financial, business and real estate matters; a health care directive or health care proxy for medical matters; and an end-of-life plan concerning the handling of your remains and memorial services. Other documents you may want to consider include a gift deed, just-in-case instructions, and a child medical consent form. If you haven't already established your estate plan, now is the perfect time. • Set goals • Document assets and debts • Create a Last Will, Power of Attorney, Health Care Directive and End-of-Life Plan • Familiarize yourself with your state's estate tax laws • Gather your important paperwork—physical and digital— and store them safely • Let representatives know how and where to access them An estate planning attorney can make sure these documents, including any amendment or codicil to your will, are done properly so they can be executed without issue. – Anthony Kearns v o l u n t e e r g u a r d i a n S H i p o n e o n o n e Volunteer Guardianship One on One is a non-profit organization founded in 1996 with a mission to provide compassionate one-on-one guardianship services to legally incapacitated adults through the education, oversight and support of dedicated volunteers. VGOO is the only nonprofit organization in NJ, and one of only a few in the country, that utilizes volunteers to serve as guardians for incapacitated adults with no one else to serve in this role. Because of our volunteers, older people with dementia and other adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities have someone that is committed to just one person and making sure that they are living their lives in a manner that reflects their wishes and values and ensures they are safe, their assets are protected, and they are not forgotten. www.VolunteerGuardianship.org.
