C O M T h e R o l e o f f i T n e s s i n l i f e l o n g h e a l T h By Andrew Wilk - Bachelors Degree in Health and Physical Education from Monmouth University, ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Fitness Nutrition & Weight Management Specialist In a world where daily schedules are packed with work, family, and endless Iphone notifications, fitness is often pushed to the side and not made a top priority by many people. As a result, individuals become sedentary. Some of the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, muscle atrophy, and increased feelings of depression and anxiety. For this reason, health and fitness needs to be made a higher priority. Regular physical activity has been shown to: • Boost heart health by improving circulation and lowering blood pressure. • Strengthen muscles and bones, reducing the risk of injury and osteoporosis as you age. • Support mental well-being, lowering stress hormones and enhancing mood through endorphins. • Balance weight by helping regulate metabolism and blood sugar. What are some easy and practical ways to stay active for those with a busy lifestyle? • Build movement into your day: take the stairs, walk during a phone call, or stretch between tasks. • Walking all by itself has health benefits! 4,000-6000 steps-15% risk reduction in heart disease 6-10,000 steps a day-50% risk reduction 10-12,000 steps a day- 65% risk reduction • Find an enjoyable way to move This can be through dancing, hiking, or lifting weights. Consistency comes from enjoyment! • Set realistic goals. Progress is better than perfection. If you create a workout routine with unrealistic goals and expectations, you're more likely to quit it. In conclusion, fitness is not about chasing a perfect body. It's about creating a stronger, healthier version of yourself that can show up fully in daily life. The goal of fitness does not have to be about deadlifting 1000 lbs or bench pressing 500 lbs. It's about being able to run around with your children without feeling out of breath, lifting a light piece of furniture for a family member, and maintaining a body that is strong enough and as pain free as possible to accomplish simple activities of daily living. By moving consistently, you're not just training for today, you're investing in decades of better health ahead!
