Ask Officer Raff: THANKSGIVING SAFETY TIPS FROM THE CLINTON TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT A s families and friends gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Clinton Township Police Department reminds residents to keep safety a top priority during the holiday season. KITCHEN SAFETY: Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. Never leave your stove unattended while cooking, and keep flammable items—like dish towels and oven mitts—away from open flames. If deep-frying a turkey, do so outdoors and away from structures. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby and ensure smoke detectors are working properly. TRAVEL SAFETY: If you're traveling, allow extra time for holiday traffic, avoid distractions while driving, and never drive under the influence. Buckle up, stay alert, and plan for rest breaks on longer trips. HOME SECURITY: If you'll be away, secure doors and windows, leave some lights on timers, and ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property. Avoid sharing travel plans on social media until after you return home. GENERAL SAFETY: Be mindful of food temperatures to prevent foodborne illness, keep small items and hot liquids out of children's reach, and ensure pets are safely away from table scraps that could be harmful. From all of us at the Clinton Township Police Department, we wish you a safe, happy, and peaceful Thanksgiving.
