Open to the public, there is a request to bring a covered dish to share. The lecture follows Supper at 6:15. Those interested in attending the lecture itself are also welcome. Originally scheduled for the January Annual Meeting, inclement weather forced the cancelation of Mercer's Presentation. A retired professional engineer, he is a 28-year resident of Tewksbury, and has been collecting toys for over 40 years. A few years ago he was "hooked" on trains when he helped his grandson set up a new Christmas gift - a set of trains! Since then he has amassed a collection of all types of trains, samples of which he will bring to the meeting. In addition to toy collecting, he gardens, is a Hunterdon County Master Gardener and a Rutgers Environmental Steward. The history of toy trains in America is linked to events and trends in American history. To have toy trains, first there had to be railroads. For electric toy trains to be sold in volume, electricity had to be available throughout the country. The Great Depression resulted in acquisitions, bankruptcies and failures of toy train manufacturers, but as the railroads struggled to retain their ridership by developing and operating streamlined, high-speed trains, the toy train industry followed them and created some of their most attractive offerings. As the Depression wound down, World War II flared up and the manufacture of all metal toys ceased. This presentation will address these events and trends. The Tewksbury Historical Society is a New Jersey not-for-profit corporation, organized for the purpose of furthering research into, and the preservation and dissemination of, the history of the Township of Tewksbury.
