Having a will avoids this. A will is a legal document, the cornerstone of any estate plan, which lets you have a say in what happens to your assets and, more importantly, your minor children once you are gone. Anyone of legal age – 18 in New Jersey – can benefit from having a will, regardless of the size of their estate. Wills allow you to: • Name an executor to manage your estate. • Identify assets to be distributed to individuals. • Appoint a guardian for your dependent children. Without a will, New Jersey's succession laws direct the distribution of your belongings according to a specific order outlined by a statute. These laws don't recognize the specifics of complex and complicated family relationships. For instance, they don't cover stepchildren or consider your reasonings for wanting to leave more to one child over another. These specifics, however, can be addressed in a will.
