As parents we know that most sports come with inherent risks of injury, but we want to keep our children as safe as possible. Research shows that injuries decrease by 55% when prevention measures are followed. Below are some healthy practices that can benefit all athletes preparing for their season. Hydration – Consuming fluids frequently helps reduce the risk of muscle cramps and heat-related illness. Skip the energy drinks, though; the extra caffeine can interfere with muscle recovery and disrupt sleep. Nutrition – Well-balanced meals and snacks fuel the body. When considering what to eat, think carbs for endurance, protein for strength and recovery, and color (i.e., fruits and vegetables) for nutrients and fiber. Note to parents: if your athlete eats everything in sight after practice, chances are they weren't sufficiently fueled earlier. Rest – Long and frequent breaks – in the shade, when possible – are especially important during these waning days of summer when the heat index can still spike. Recovery – After the season, take a break from organized sports to allow both your body and mind to recover. It's recommended student athletes not play the same sport for more than eight months of the year to allow the muscles stressed during the season to recover and others to develop. Warm-Ups and Cool-Downs – These exercises should not be avoided as they help reduce injury risk, enhance performance, and improve recovery. Sports-Specific Equipment – Helmets, pads, mouthguards, goggles and other safety equipment are designed to support and protect the body parts most vulnerable to injury depending on the sport. Good condition and proper fit are important here. Keep an Eye on the Sky – In the event of a lightning storm, common this time of year, avoid using electronic devices, including phones, and steer clear of concrete. And, the most important advice parents can share – winning at all costs is not what's important; effort and progress are. – Anthony Kearns
