"If ant hills are high in July, the coming winter will be hard." ~ American Folklore Julie, I chuckled while reading about the "Bert" tree in May's Newsletter. Very clever. I thought that perhaps you and your readers might like to know why that tree has grown that way. The tree is an Alberta Spruce, a variety of White Spruce (Picea glauca). The original Alberta Spruce tree was discovered by botanists in Alberta, Canada in 1904 as a chance mutation. Its dwarf nature resulted in it becoming one of the most popular dwarf conifers with hundreds of thousands of them grown and sold by nurseries. Occasionally branches on Alberta Spruces revert to the original species form, as can be seen in your image. If left as is the reverted part of that tree will continue to grow as a typical White Spruce, perhaps reaching a height of 50 feet. I always enjoy reading the Newsletter. Keep up the good work. Regards, Tom Ombrello Clinton Twp. Dear Tom, Thank you so much for your letter, for the information about this funky tree, and for the compliment and encouragement. Keep reading the CT Newsletter! :) Take care, Julie Hi Julie, Your June cover is so ethereal and b e a u t i f u l ! W o u l d y o u s h a r e y o u r inspiration? I love the colors and the energy. I just saw MISSION IMPOSSIBLE (Every Summer I like to see the "talk" of the movie season so that I can participate in the conversation with my kids. The rest of the year it's small independent movies, "thank you very much!" LOL). There is a long scene underwater that reminds me a little of your cover. A week ago, expecting house guests, I put away the last vestige of Christmas, a solitary little tree that sits in our office and brightens up the dark days of Winter. I should have kept it up. At the speed we're going, Christmas is next month, right?? :) Enjoy your Summer and thank you for all the publicity. We are getting some new members every month out of this area. My very best, Evelyn Breheney Glynn, Founder/Director Women's Forum Hi Evelyn, Thank you so much! I was actually thinking a lot about life, and death, while designing this cover, as I've known several people who have passed away this year, but I also have known quite a few babies that have been born recently. I'm much more an artist than a poet, but I found this quote, by Vincent van Gogh, that seems to fit the design pretty well, "The heart of man is very much like the sea, it has its storms, it has its tides and in its depths it has its pearls too." As for finally putting away your Christmas decorations, I totally understand! Before you know it, it will be Fall, and then Winter again so, in the meantime, we need to enjoy the beautiful summer, hug our loved ones, and appreciate every day as it comes, right? Oh and, no problem — I got your July meeting info into the July issue (on page 9). It looks really interesting, as always! Thanks, Julie Julie, Good morning. Glorious Father's Day tribute to your dad. Would make every father proud. He is fortunate for his daughter. God bless you, family, America!!! All the best, Slainte,' Vince Bury, Annandale Thank you so much, Vince – I am truly blessed to have him as a father! Take care, Julie letters to the editor
