3 j u l y 2 0 2 5 Happy Fourth of July Well, Happy July, Y'all (or, close to it, depending on when this issue hits your mailboxes). Designing each July cover is, I've come to real- ize, hard for me, as I want to convey patriotism and how amazing our country is (yes it is!), while also getting across the idea of celebration and keeping it bi-partisan, too. I googled the top ten concerns of voters in this country and threw them into this design as well. (Here's the list: the Economy, Inflation, Jobs, Immigration, Threats to Democracy, Healthcare, Crime and Public Safety, Gun Policy, Social Security and Medicare, the Federal Deficit, and the National Debt.) Mind you, my goal was to keep this list non-partisan. It's hard to believe that next year we will all be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, a.k.a., "The United States Semiquincentennial", also called the "Bisesquicen- tennial", the "Sestercentennial", "America250" or the "Quarter Millen- nium". According to www.america250.org,, "America250's mission is to celebrate and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking America's Semiquincentennial. We aim to inspire our fellow Americans to reflect on our past, strengthen our love of country, and renew our commitment to the ideals of democracy through programs that educate, engage, and unite us as a nation. America250 will foster shared experi- ences that spark imagination, showcase the rich tapestry of our American stories, inspire service in our communities, honor the enduring strength, and celebrate the resilience of the United States of America." It sounds so exciting, doesn't it? I can vividly remember our Bicenten- nial when I was a child in 1976. American flag clothing was ubiquitous, which I later found out goes against the U.S. Flag Code, section 4-(d), which states: "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bed- ding, or drapery." I thought all the flag clothing, hats, and accessories were pretty great back then; it will be interesting to see if they make a return next year. I'm always hopeful for peace, respect, and mutual understanding in America (and the entire world, for that matter). In my school as a child, during chapel, we would often sing the song (written in 1955 by Jill Jackson and Sy Miller) that included the words, "Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me." Well, that's what I'm always striving for with this publication — strengthening our community while peacefully sharing pertinent information… that also (hopefully) looks good. So during this month of celebrating our Nation's Independence, I'm reminding you (as I often do with my adult children), Have Fun, Be Safe, and let's hope for peace throughout our country. Maybe it can begin with you?
