The mission of the Peyton Heart Project is to raise global awareness
about suicide, bullying, and to help end the stigma surrounding
mental health issues. Delicate handmade Peyton Hearts are shared
throughout Hunterdon County and surrounding areas with inspirational
messages. They can be found across the country and all over the world!
Virginia Wodock began her mission of sharing Peyton Hearts
in 2022 when she found her first Peyton Heart at a Starbucks
in Doylestown, PA. The hearts were placed there in memory of Peyton
James, a young boy who like many others, experienced a tremendous amount
of bullying in school. In 2014, at 13 years old, he died by suicide. Each heart
represents the delicate heart of a life lost to suicide. The beautiful inspirational
sayings on the tags attached to the hearts are uplifting and help to raise the
spirits of those receiving one along with a link to "The Peyton Heart Project"
a non-profit organization. You can find facts and information here: www.
ThePeytonHeartProject.org.
After learning a friend lost her son to suicide, Virginia began
spreading the message of hope by making Peyton hearts. Since that
time, she has shared over 26,000 crocheted hearts throughout Hunterdon
County and the surrounding areas with the help of several devoted Peyton
Heart making ladies who are truly an inspiration.
Peyton Hearts are given to individuals while on daily errands…
they have been donated to the Hunterdon County Senior Center, Hunterdon
Regional Cancer Center, doctor offices, food pantries, libraries, Starbucks, and
other local coffee shops, retail stores etc. Events have been held sharing how
to make the hearts, students have made and shared hearts with fellow students
in our schools, and hearts have been scattered to locations throughout our
community…they are everywhere!
The responses from those finding a heart are heartwarming.
While filling baskets and giving out individual hearts, people have shared
their personal struggles and some coping with their children being bullied at
school. One mother shared that her son carries a heart in his pocket, and she
carries one in hers. When her son is struggling at school, he holds the heart
in his hand and feels her love and strength surrounding him.
Virginia is a resident of Hunterdon County and a member of the
Hunterdon County Senior Center. For more details about making and
donating hearts, you can contact her through the Hunterdon County Senior
Center. For more information about The Peyton Heart Project or to donate,
