By 1900 John Singer Sargent was the most sought-after
portraitist in the Western world. He captured in oil and
watercolor the extravagance of the Gilded Age.
Dear Ladies, We're dedicating the month of May to the painter
John Singer Sargent. First with a documentary about his life and his artistic
career, and then with a trip to the Met for the exhibit - Sargent and Paris.
Those of you who joined us on Zoom over the pandemic (when we
first encountered the story of this prolific artist) will remember the
twists and turns of his journey, finally landing him with dubious
honor at the Paris Salon. Here he delivered a painting so bewitching
and "disturbing" (of a fully clothed woman) which would scandalize the
establishment as she hung in a room replete with nudes – a fact that no one
even seemed to notice! That beauty was Madame X in her "little black dress"!!
LUNCH WITH JOHN SINGER SARGENT: Thursday May 15 at noon.
Dillon Library, Bedminster NJ. Admission: $20. Register here: https://
