Diabetic nerve pain of the feet is also known as painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy, which occurs if the nerves are damaged as a result of diabetes. There are many people with diabetes who just have numbness or tingling in their feet. This numbness can get worse and cause burning and shooting pain in both feet, and it can also cause patients to have difficulty sleeping. There is no cure for the diabetic neuropathy, but there are numerous treatments for it, including oral medications and topical pain relief creams, which only help with the symptoms of the severe pain. There is a new, in-office, thirty-minute treatment for diabetics who are experiencing severe burning and shooting which can help quiet the nerves, and can be performed by your podiatrist. This topical treatment is called Qutenza – impregnated sheets with 8% Capsaicin. This medication is similar to pepper spray but at a much higher concentration. These specialized sheets are applied to your feet once every three months for thirty minutes each time. Many patients can get complete relief of pain with this new cutting-edge treatment, and some can see improvement after just one treatment. Most insurances and Medicare will cover this 100%. Prior authorizations will be performed. Save the Date for Annandale's Multi-House Tag Sale: May 17-18!
