The illustrated presentation is sponsored by the Tewksbury Historical Society on Sunday, April 6, at the Zion Lutheran Church Christian Education Building, 16 Miller Avenue in Oldwick at 2:00 pm. Guests are welcome; refreshments will be served. Thomson presents the history of Wildfair, the 21st Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens presented by the Women's Association for Morristown Medical Center. The 50-acre property in Chester was first developed more than 220 years ago as a farm, gristmill and sawmill along the upper-reaches of the Peapack Brook. In 1934, Elizabeth Wolcott Elkins and Harry Bowly Hollins III retained the prominent Willing, Sims & Talbutt architectural firm of Philadelphia to design their elegant country estate, a rambling fieldstone building with several wings on different levels, and incorporating an existing 19thcentury stone structure. In the 1990's extensive addition and alteration created the present structure and a nearby barn. The house today, which overlooks the restored 18th century millpond, consists of thirty-eight designer spaces and thirteen landscape areas. Born and raised in Peapack-Gladstone, Barry Thomson received his undergraduate degree at Drew University, took architecture and urban planning courses at Harvard University and was a David Rockefeller Fellow, a program the New York City Partnership. With the late Jack Turpin he co-authored the two-volume work "New Jersey Country Houses: The Somerset Hills" and he continues to write and give presentations about architecture and local history. Mansion in May is the preeminent designer showhouse and gardens in the New Jersey-New York area, attracting over 20,000 visitors. Wildfair will be open to the public for Mansion in May from May 1 to May 31. Funds raised will be used toward the purchase of a MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System (tm) at Morristown Medical Center's Carol G. Simon Cancer Center.
