3 m a r c h 2 0 2 5 Happy St. Patrick's Day! Are you feeling lucky? I know I am. By "lucky", one could also say I mean "blessed." While getting older has its downsides – I'll be 60 next year – I feel very lucky and, yes, blessed to still be here, as we all know several people whom we lost too early. They would give anything to be here, I'm guessing. Or, perhaps they are blissful where they are, and they're the "lucky" ones? That's life's greatest mystery, isn't it? I consider my husband and I very lucky to have made a life here, and to have raised our children in Hunterdon County. Based on his research, Clinton Township offered us the most property (within commuting distance of our jobs) for our money, plus excellent schools and low crime. The discovery that we were surrounded by gorgeous open space – farms, countryside, rolling hills – came after we had moved into our first home on Blossom Hill, and then we felt truly lucky indeed. Once our oldest child started kindergarten at Spruce Run School, we met a bunch of great people, and I felt our luck had multiplied. Our children say the same about growing up in Clinton Township. One time when I was in the car with my youngest two kids (and isn't that where the most interesting conversations seem to take place?) my daughter, a college student at the time, said to our son, who was still at North, "You know, I realized once I went away to school, that if we (Flynn) kids don't succeed, it's on us." She clarified, "We were given everything growing up, loving, supportive parents, a great place to grow up, fantastic schools... so it's our fault if we don't do well." This comment validated for me every decision that my husband and I ever made while raising our kids, and made up for a lot of the eye-rolls we received from them as teenagers! I should note that while we tried to give them lots of love and guidance as they were growing up, we didn't shower them with material goods. I think I used the words, "I'm sorry, we can't afford that." so much that my children internalized it, to the point where, years later, I found myself saying, "Okay, we actually can afford that." Luck is what's given to you, but, at the same time, we make our luck, right? I hope during this month of is-it-winter?/is-it spring? March, You all find yourselves very lucky, make your own luck and also appreciate all of the luck and blessings you already have. As the writer Tennessee Williams once said, "Luck is believing you're lucky."
