Inspired by the release of the current Maria Callas movie starring Angelina Jolie, I decided to retrieve this topic from my "WF Inspiration folder" where it's been residing for some years - waiting for the right moment. The exceptionally gifted artists, whom we come to refer to as "Divas" light up stages and bring to life a luminous presence wherever they perform. Legions of fans wait faithfully, sometimes camped out overnight at the box office for a chance to purchase a ticket to experience the magic. This March, Women's Forum is pleased to honor two legendary Divas ~ Maria Callas ~ & ~Dame Margot Fonteyn. MARIA CALLAS: Born in Manhattan in 1923, Maria was an American and Greek soprano who was one of the most celebrated artists of all time. Her musical and dramatic talents led to her being titled La Divina! With her beauty and talent, and as powerful as her performances were on stage, her private life was equally tumultuous and passionate. Join us as we celebrate this icon with a documentary telling her story through presentations, TV interviews, family photographs and private letters. THE MARIA CALLAS LUNCHEON: Thursday March 13, at noon. Dillon Library, Bedminster, NJ. Admission is $20. *To register see below. DAME MARGOT FONTEYN: Born in Surrey, England in 1919, Margot was a classical ballerina. From early childhood she demonstrated an ability for dance prompting her enrollment in ballet classes at the age of four. As a prima ballerina with The Royal Ballet, she became an international sensation. Her appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show ignited a popularity for dance in the United States to the profit and joy of dancing schools nationwide. (I would venture to guess that many of you were given ballet and tap-dancing lessons as a little girl! I was!!) In 1981 as she was considering retirement she was paired with the young Rudolf Nureyev - a defector from the Kirov Ballet in the Soviet Union and 19 years her junior. The duo was a triumph from his debut performance in Giselle. Margot went on to be honored as Prima Ballerina Assoluta of the Royal Ballet Company by Queen Elizabeth II. Join us for a documentary screening of the life of this icon at: THE MARGOT FONTEYN LUNCHEON: Thursday March 27, at noon. Dillon Library, Bedminster, NJ. Admission is $20. *To register see below. Upcoming event dates: Thursdays, April 10 and 24. To register for events reach us at: womensforumusa@ gmail.com or call the Dillon Library: 908.234.2325. Chris Teasdale will conduct a "virtual hike" at the Tewksbury Historical Society Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 16, 1:00 pm at the Zion Lutheran Church Christian Education Building, 18 Miller Avenue, Oldwick, 08858. Election of officers and the 2024 Year- End Financial Report takes place. The meeting, with refreshments, is open to the public. If bad weather prevails, the meeting will be cancelled. Details at: www. TewksburyHistory.net. Teasdale "walks" Hell Mountain through several hundred years from the Lenape presence until today. The story includes the Lenape sachems Matamisco and Wontomoman, the English royal family, William Penn, Lord Berkeley, Sir Geroge Carteret, and Lewis Morris, the first Governor of the colony of New Jersey after the crown separated its governance from New York. He will tell the tales of alleged ruffians hiding in the hills and other lore giving the mountain its notorious reputation. He will review the last 75 years of development, including the Tewksbury's preservation of 100 acres. Using photographs taken over the past 25 years he will weave information of the environment and natural history. Teasdale, former long-term Chair of the Environmental Commission, is a Phi Beta Kapa graduate of Skidmore College, served as an editor for Horticulture Magazine, worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and taught ancient history at Morristown-Beard School where he developed a seminar for seniors on the history of the use of forests from ancient times to modern America. He is currently the Secretary of the Tewksbury Land Trust. The Tewksbury Historical Society is a New Jersey not-for-profit corporation, organized for the purpose of furthering research into, and the preservation and dissemination of, the history of the Township of Tewksbury. The Society requests donations of documents, records and small artifacts related to Tewksbury's History for its archives.
